Short Bio

Dr Ugwu is the Director of JU Consulting and Research Services (JUCRS) Limited - a research and business consulting firm registered and incorporated in Hong Kong SAR. His education and work experiences span across several continents; Africa, Europe and Asia. He graduated with a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Nigeria Nsukka – UNN (Africa), and MSc & PhD both from the United Kingdom (Europe).He believes in distributed approach to solving complex problems, and that this digital era offers unprecedented opportunity for global collaborative working in solving global problems. His research interests cover project collaborative systems and collaborative technology including theoretical foundations and applications of information and communication technology (ICT), project management, sustainable construction/development, general infrastructure and critical infrastructure systems. His advanced ICT and collaborative technology research stream covers theoretical and applied topics in areas such as Intelligent Agents & Multi-Agent Systems, Evolutionary Computing (particularly Genetic Algorithms – GA, and Artificial Neural Networks - ANN), Infrastructure Systems, Sustainable Construction, and Project Management.

He was a Research Assistant Professor/Honorary Assistant Professor at the Dept of Civil Engineering, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) from June 2002 – June 2006. He was also the Convenor of the Sustainable Infrastructure Task Group at the Centre for Infrastructure & Construction Industry Development (CICID), HKU from 2005-2006. After serving as the Convenor of the Sustainability Task Force at CICID, HKU from August 2005-June 2006, he was reappointed Chairman of the Sustainability Task Force and Member of the Management Committee at CICID, HKU in January 2007. He stepped down as the Chairman of the Sustainability Task Force in May 2007, but remains a member of the Task Force & Management Committee.

Before joining HKU, he worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Department of Civil and Building Engineering, Loughborough University UK from 1999-2002, on the ADLIB  project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council UK. The Agent-Based Support for the Collaborative Design of Light Industrial Buildings (ADLIB) Project investigated the use of Intelligent Agents in distributed collaborative design. The ADLIB research project led to the publication of the book – Agents and Multi-Agent Systems in Construction (Taylor & Francis 2005), which he co-edited. He held the Royal Society UK Fellowship Award as a Visiting Scientist from China to Loughborough University UK, in July/August 2003, and the Republic of South Africa National Research Foundation (NRF) International Science Liaison (ISL) Visiting Fellowship Award to Cape Peninsula University of Technology South Africa, in May 2005.

He takes active participation in research and professional activities including the ASCE Global Center of Excellence in Computing, in which he coordinated the African Universities Network. He is a Peer Reviewer for several international journals, and has over 90 publications in his research areas, including authored/author-edited books and book chapters, journal and conference proceedings papers. He is listed in several biographical records and is a Life Fellow of International Biographical Association (LFIBA), Cambridge, UK.
