Žiga Turk

Short Bio

Žiga Turk (1962) holds degrees in structural engineering and computer science from University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He is the professor and chair in Construction informatics at the Faculty of Civil Engineering. He lectures descriptive geometry, technical documentation and computer aided design at the faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering and Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana. He was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Institute of Technology - KTH, in Stockholm and Visiting Professor at the University of Zagreb, Croatia and Technical University of Istanbul, Turkey.

His research topic is construction information technology, particularly computer integrated construction, computerization of building regulations, product and process modeling, engineering information systems and communication technology such as Internet. His interests also include the philosophy of CAD, distance learning and knowledge transfer. He has published over 140 research publications and over 150 papers and technical articles in Slovenian language and as well as two books.

Dr. Turk is the co-editor on an international peer-reviewed scientific journal "Electronic Journal of Information Technology in Construction", member of the editorial board of two other scientific journals, the co-chair of the CIB's Working Commission on Information Technology in Construction, general secretary of the European Association of Product and Process modeling etc. Regularly he serves in scientific committees of international conferences related to information technology. In 1996 he organized an international workshop "Construction on the Information Highway", attended by the leading experts from four continents and in 2002 an international conference "eWork and eBusiness in Architecture, Engineering and Construction".

Since 1993 he has been providing several well cited services for the international research community on the Internet and the World Wide Web. His best know invention are the www.shareware.com and the web database services development tool Woda - each a leader in its category according to the directory maintained by Google.

He has been involved in the European projects since the early 1990s; took part in one framework 4 project, four framework 5 projects, two framework 6 projects and two eContenet projects. He has also been a coordinator of one Framework 5 and one Framework 6 project (with budgets between 1.5 and 3.5 million Euro) and the leader of Slovenian programme eConstruction.

Dr. Turk is the Chairman of the Supervisory board of the Telekom Slovenije d.d. and a vice chair of the Strategic Council for Culture, Education and Science of the Republic of Slovenia.
