Hani G. Melhem

Short Bio

Hani G. Melhem is a Martin Eby Professor of Structural Engineering. Since joining the CE faculty at KSU in 1991, Dr. Melhem has taught 14 different undergraduate and graduate courses. He worked on several research projects sponsored by the Kansas Department of Transportation involving Artificial Intelligence, experimental testing and modeling of steel and concrete girders, accelerated pavement testing, the effect of impact on bridges, and health monitoring of structures. His most recent research has been on Bridge Management systems, bridge inspection and evaluation, and structural damage detection. He was CE g raduate program director from 1996 to 2002. He is currently the undergraduate program director and the ASCE Student Chapter advisor at KSU. In 1993, he originated the annual Bridge Design Workshop at KSU and has been the workshop director since then. He is author of more than 75 publications and technical reports. He also made numerous presentations at national and international conferences. From 1994 through 1996 Dr. Melhem was in charge of planning, constructing, and developing the full-scale accelerated testing facility at KSU and was the director of this facility till 2000.

Dr. Melhem is a member of several professional organizations including the A merican Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI), Society of Experimental Mechanics (SEM), and American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). He serves on the ASCE national committees on Steel Bridges, and on Experimental Analysis and Instrumentation. He is also p ast-chair of the ASCE Committee on Intelligent Computing (of the Technical Council on Computing and Information Technology) and currently member of its EXCOM, and previously served as secretary and acting chair of the committee on Emerging Computing Technologies (Structural Division). He’s been the chief technical editor of the ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering since 2001. Dr. Melhem is currently the president of the Kansas Section of ASCE.
