Bio
Rafal Kicinger is a Research Assistant Professor in the School of Information Technology & Engineering, George Mason University and a Post-Doctoral Fellow at George Mason University’s Critical Infrastructure Protection Program. He earned a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Warsaw University of Technology in 1999 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from George Mason University in the fall of 2004. His interdisciplinary research interests include evolutionary design, novel methods of design inspired by the fundamental processes of biological development and evolution, cellular automata, and innovative approaches to critical infrastructure protection.
Rafal Kicinger co-authored more than 20 refereed papers, including book chapters, journal articles, and conference papers. He made more than a dozen of presentations at major international conferences in Europe, Japan, and in the United States. He is a recipient of several prestigious awards on three continents, including the Outstanding Graduate Student Award from the School of Information Technology and Engineering, the International Internship Award from the 21st Century Center of Excellence of Flow Dynamics, Tohoku University, Japan, and a Merit Scholarship from the Polish Ministry of Education, Poland. As a part of his research, he developed a unique research and design support tool called Emergent Designer which earned the Best Use of Technology Award during the Innovations 2004 Exhibition at George Mason University. He is also a Summa Cum Laude Alumnus of the Department of Civil Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology.
Professional service is an essential component of Rafal Kicinger’s academic career. He has served as a reviewer for several journals, including the Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering, the AIAA Journal, and the International Journal of Information Sciences, as well as for several international conferences. He also acted as a student Vice-President of the local chapter of Phi Beta Delta, an Honor Society for International Scholars. Currently, he is actively involved in the creation of the ASCE Global Center of Excellence in Computing.
Sport has always been an important part of Rafal’s life. As a teenager, he was a professional field hockey player and a member of the Polish U21 national team. Nowadays, he is actively involved in recreational field hockey and soccer. He also occasionally coaches local high-school teams and serves as an umpire during field hockey tournaments.
