At UCF, Ni-Bin Chang teaches courses in Introduction to Environmental Engineering, Industrial Ecology, Advanced Hydrology, Hydraulics, Fluid Mechanics, and Environmental and Water Resources Systems Analysis. He is also with Stormwater Management Academy and actively involved in making his Systems Engineering Research connected with higher education program in the area of IT-centered and sustainability-based Water Resources and Environmental Engineering. Research activities include development of original computing applications in the area of evolutionary computing, remote sensing and sensor technology, decision support system and artificial intelligence, green materials and ecological engineering, low impact development and stormwater management, watershed management, and on-site wastewater treatment. Many current and previous projects lie on the interfaces between these topics leading toward achieving the goals in the nexus of resources management, technology integration, and engineering optimization.
Ni-Bin Chang has 117 peer-reviewed journal publications and 99 conference papers up to 2007. He was one of the founders of International Society of Environmental Information Management and the former editor-in-chief of Journal of Environmental Informatics. Recently, he served as guest editor for the Special Issue of the Journal of Environmental Management, Journal of Environmental Modeling and Assessment, Practice Periodicals of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste Management, ASCE, and Stochastic Environmental Research & Risk Assessment. He is also sitting in the editorial board of Journal of Applied Remote Sensing as associate editor (Official Journal of International Society of Optical Engineering (SPIE)), and board members of 9 international journals, including Journal of Environmental Management, Stochastic Environmental Research & Risk Assessment, Environmental Management, Environmental Impact Assessment Review, Journal of Civil Engineering and Environmental Systems, Journal of Recent Patents on Chemical Engineering, Journal of Information Technology Research, The Journal of Solid Waste Technology and Management, and Journal of the Chinese Institute of Environmental Engineering.
Professional activities are an important part of Ni-Bin Chang’s life. He is a member of fifteen international professional societies. He is also active in the ASCE/EWRI conference and committees, where he is the member in the ASCE Global Center of Excellence in Computing, Groundwater Hydrology Task Committee, and Water Resources and Environmental Systems Committee. He is on the boards of many regional and local committees, such as Florida Center for Solid and Hazardous Waste Management (FCSHWM) advisory board, teaching fellow of Florida Green Engineering Education Program, and Chinese American Water Resources Association.
